Abdominoplasty · Tummy tuck

If pregnancy or weight loss has left you with excess abdominal skin, a tummy tuck may improve your contour. During your consultation, we distinguish between changes involving the skin, fat and abdominal wall.

What we can improve.

The operation removes excess skin and fat and can repair separation of the rectus abdominal muscles, known as diastasis. This separation can contribute to a rounded abdomen even when your weight is stable. If we suspect a hernia, we will investigate it and coordinate treatment where appropriate.

A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss operation and does not remove the fat inside the abdomen, around the organs. We assess your weight, fat distribution, previous scars and pregnancy plans. Having a stable weight helps us plan how much tissue to remove and maintain the result.

Options and scars.

A mini tummy tuck is reserved for limited changes, mainly below the belly button. A full tummy tuck treats more extensive excess skin and usually leaves a low abdominal scar and another around the belly button. The choice depends on the skin that needs removing, not simply a preference for a shorter scar.

It can be combined with liposuction to address fat deposits in specific areas. After major weight loss, excess skin may extend towards the flanks or in several directions and require more extensive surgery. I will show you where the scars would sit and which areas would benefit from each option.

What recovery involves.

The first few days

Arrange at least one to two initial weeks to take things gently, with help at home. This means slowing down, not staying in bed: gentle walking from the outset, as advised, is part of recovery. Tightness and some difficulty sitting up are common initially.

Returning to your routine

A desk job may require around two to four weeks before returning. Lifting, abdominal training and intense exercise usually wait six to eight weeks, particularly if the abdominal wall has been repaired. You can drive again when you can move and react normally, without medication that reduces alertness.

How the result develops

You will wear the recommended compression garment, and we will arrange postoperative care, including lymphatic drainage where appropriate, with a plan adapted to your progress. If surgical drains are used, removal is guided by follow-up checks. Swelling, tightness and skin numbness gradually improve over several months; the scar also needs time to mature.

Safety and possible risks.

Preparation includes reviewing smoking, medication, nutritional status and any history of thrombosis. This information guides our measures to reduce the risk of blood clots, your mobilisation plan and follow-up. A compression garment or massage does not replace these measures or prevent every complication on its own.

We check that the wounds are closing well and that fluid is not collecting under the skin. A fluid collection, known as a seroma, a small wound opening or a thicker scar may need additional care; bleeding and infection are also possible. We will explain which symptoms are expected and which changes need assessment. Shortness of breath or chest pain requires urgent medical attention.

What we will discuss.

  • Whether excess skin, fat or muscle separation is the main issue.
  • Which scar is needed for the change you want.
  • Whether a possible hernia needs investigating.
  • What help you will need with work, movement and caring for others.

Frequently asked questions.

Will it remove all stretch marks?

Stretch marks within the skin that is removed will go. Those outside that area may change position, but the operation does not erase every abdominal stretch mark.

Can my caesarean scar be corrected at the same time?

It often lies within the skin being removed or can be incorporated into the new scar. This depends on its height and how much excess skin is available.

Should I wait if I want another pregnancy?

Pregnancy can stretch the skin and abdominal wall again. If you are planning one soon, it usually makes sense to consider surgery afterwards. We will discuss this in light of your circumstances and discomfort.
