Revision breast surgery

If you have already had breast surgery and something concerns you, we start by understanding what was done and what has changed. Revision surgery may address the implants, your tissues or both, with a plan designed for your current situation.

What we can improve.

You may seek advice because a breast has hardened, an implant has moved, your breasts have gradually dropped or there is a difference you dislike. Pregnancy or weight loss may also have brought changes. Not all of these situations can be resolved by changing implant size.

The examination is supported by records of the first operation and any tests that are needed. We assess tissue quality and thickness, scars and pre-existing differences. Your previous experience also matters: what you liked, what you found difficult and what you hope to improve now.

Options and scars.

Treatment may involve adjusting the implant pocket, changing its position, treating a hardened capsule, replacing implants or removing them. If the skin has stretched, a lift may be added. When appropriate, your own fat can help improve tissue coverage or small irregularities.

Revision surgery requires a plan adapted to tissues that have already been operated on. Sometimes one operation can achieve the aim; in other cases, treatment is better divided into stages. I will explain which changes are reasonable, which scars can be used again and which new ones may be needed.

What recovery involves.

The first few days

There is no single recovery pattern for revision surgery. A simple replacement is often easier because the pocket already exists; rebuilding the pocket, treating the capsule or performing a lift requires greater protection of the tissues.

Returning to your routine

Before surgery, we will agree what help you will need, when your first wound check will take place and how much time to allow off work. As a guide, desk-based tasks may be resumed after one to two weeks in straightforward cases; more extensive revisions need longer. Lifting and sport are reintroduced in stages after checking the wounds and breast position.

How the result develops

Swelling is normal initially, and the two sides may settle at different rates. Follow-up photographs help put the changes into perspective. We avoid judging the result too soon, particularly when there was internal scarring or very stretched skin.

Safety and possible risks.

Revision surgery requires particular care with the blood supply and support of tissues that have already been treated. Before proposing more volume or removing large amounts of capsule, we assess the benefit and what this means for your breasts.

Asymmetry, altered sensation or scars needing treatment may remain. Bleeding, infection and a recurrence of implant problems are also possible. We will discuss the specific risks of the chosen procedure and how we will monitor them, rather than proposing a generic correction. If a breast has recently enlarged or a lump has appeared, we will first investigate the cause.

What we will discuss.

  • What you would like to improve about your previous result.
  • Which reports and scans you can bring.
  • Which changes depend on the implant and which on your tissues.
  • Whether treatment should take place in one or several stages.

Frequently asked questions.

My breast has hardened and changed shape. What could have happened?

One possibility is that the capsule around the implant has tightened, but an examination and assessment of any necessary tests are needed to confirm this. Breast discomfort and differences do not all have the same cause.

Does revision always mean replacing the implants?

No. Sometimes the issue lies in the pocket holding them, the skin or the distribution of tissue. Depending on the situation, the plan may keep, replace or remove the implants.

How long should I wait after the first operation?

If the concern is cosmetic and recovery is progressing normally, the tissues usually need time to settle. If a complication is suspected, assessment should take place sooner. Timing is determined by the problem, rather than a fixed date for everyone.

Keep exploring.
