Discomfort from rubbing, sport or certain clothes may be a reason to seek advice about the labia minora. Assessment takes place privately and with respect for your anatomy, without assuming there is one shape your vulva should have.

What we can improve.

There is wide normal variation in the size, colour and symmetry of the labia. Labiaplasty is considered when there is specific discomfort or a change you wish to explore, not simply because the inner labia are visible beyond the outer labia.

During your consultation, I will ask which activities are uncomfortable, how long this has been happening and whether there is pain, irritation or infection. Some symptoms have dermatological or gynaecological causes needing their own treatment. Examination aims to distinguish these before deciding whether reducing tissue could help.

Options and scars.

Labiaplasty can adjust size or shape by removing tissue along the edge or through a wedge excision that preserves part of the natural border. The choice depends on anatomy, the location of excess tissue and the tissues we need to preserve.

The outer labia and mons pubis are assessed separately if they also cause discomfort or changes in volume. Additional procedures are not routinely necessary. Surgery on the inner labia also does not, by itself, correct vaginal or pelvic-floor problems; if these are present, appropriate assessment is recommended.

What recovery involves.

The first few days

Swelling and tenderness may be noticeable during the first few days. We will explain hygiene, drying the area without rubbing and clothing that avoids friction. Activity is resumed gradually, with breaks to keep you comfortable and protect the wound.

Returning to your routine

Although quiet work can resume early in some cases, allow several days and longer if your work involves extensive walking or uncomfortable prolonged sitting. Sexual activity involving contact with the area, cycling and impact sport usually wait around four to six weeks, or until a review confirms good healing.

How the result develops

Stitches are usually dissolvable, and the initial shape changes as swelling settles. Sensation and flexibility adapt over weeks or months. Avoid judging symmetry during the first few days or touching the stitches.

Safety and possible risks.

Planning aims to remove only the necessary tissue while preserving function and sensation. Excessive removal can cause discomfort and is harder to correct, so a conservative design is important.

A stitch line may open in places, and bleeding, infection or a tender scar can occur. Differences between the labia, changes in sensation or discomfort during sex may also persist. I will explain these risks and alternatives clearly; wound checks help identify problems and support recovery without dismissing your symptoms.

What we will discuss.

  • Which activities cause discomfort.
  • Whether any symptoms need gynaecological or dermatological assessment.
  • Which tissue is proposed for treatment and what aims are reasonable.

Frequently asked questions.

Is it normal for one labium to be larger than the other?

Yes, differences are common. Suitability for surgery depends on discomfort and your own assessment, rather than a pursuit of perfect symmetry.

Will I lose sensation?

The technique aims to preserve it, but any surgery in this area can alter sensation temporarily or persistently. This should be discussed before deciding.

Will it improve my sex life?

It may improve mechanical discomfort from rubbing in suitable cases, but improved sexual function cannot be promised. Pain or sexual difficulties can have other causes.

Keep exploring.
