Arm lift · Brachioplasty

When the skin on the inner upper arm has become loose, further weight loss or exercise may not tighten it sufficiently. Brachioplasty removes this excess skin to improve the arm's contour.

What we can improve.

We assess how much of the volume is fat and how much is skin, from the armpit to the elbow. After major weight loss, the excess may continue onto the side of the chest. Examination helps define which area should be treated.

We also discuss what bothers you: rubbing, difficulty with clothes or the movement of loose skin. The decision often involves weighing up the improvement in contour against the necessary scar, which is a real part of this operation.

Options and scars.

If fat is the main issue and the skin can retract well, liposuction may be enough. Excess skin needs removing. A scar limited to the armpit may be considered for small, localised excess; in more extensive cases, it extends along the inner or rear-inner upper arm.

Liposuction can complement the lift to refine volume. I will show you the scar's position with your arm in different positions: it will not always be hidden when you move. The design takes into account both contour and the tension placed on the wounds.

What recovery involves.

The first few days

Initially, you will feel tightness when raising your arms. Arrange help with dressing, reaching high objects and tasks requiring strength. You can move your hands and elbows as advised; we will avoid keeping you completely still. If compression is prescribed, we will check the fit to prevent excessive pressure.

Returning to your routine

Office work may be resumed after around one to two weeks, depending on wound care. Lifting, pulling objects and arm training need longer, often six weeks or more. Healing in the armpit and areas under greater tension guides the pace.

How the result develops

Swelling decreases over several weeks and the contour gradually becomes clearer. The scar may initially look red or feel firm and takes months to mature. Once the wound has closed, we will advise you on suitable scar care and sun protection.

Safety and possible risks.

Reducing wound tension and respecting the tissues of the inner arm are key parts of planning. Areas in folds may need longer wound care, and scars can widen or remain more visible than you would like.

We also monitor fluid collections, infection, changes in sensation and differences in contour. Persistent swelling from altered drainage is a risk to consider, particularly with extensive surgery. Follow-up allows us to adjust compression, movement and care without rushing recovery just because the incision appears closed.

What we will discuss.

  • How far the excess skin extends.
  • Which scar would be needed and how it will look when you move your arm.
  • Which activities you need to adapt during the first few weeks.

Frequently asked questions.

Can the gym get rid of excess skin?

Exercise improves muscle and arm shape, but does not remove a substantial amount of excess skin. During your consultation, we distinguish which component is the main issue.

Can a long scar be avoided?

Only if the amount of excess skin allows limited treatment. Shortening the scar while leaving excess skin may not resolve your concern.

Can both arms be treated at once?

They are usually planned together. This makes it important to arrange help with tasks you would normally do using your other arm.

Keep exploring.
